In the recent history of Mönchengladbach the opening of the Joint Headquarters 50 years ago in Rheindahlen was a significant event. The presence of thousands of soldiers and their families led to the development of good and friendly contacts with the citizens of Mönchengladbach.
The biennial NATO Music Festival also dates from that time, the first performance taking place in 1960. It is a music festival which demonstrates particularly well, the understanding between the people of many different nations.
It arose from the need to express friendship and unity among the nations of the NATO countries. Upto eight nations take part in each NATO Music Festival.
The overall musical direction has always been in hands of the Bundeswehr’s Musical Director.
